Executive Committee
Dear EAED members affiliates and friends,
A short while ago, we held our autumn meeting in the beautiful Algarve region, which was attended by 58 people. Most of them were active members, but we also had the pleasure of welcoming representatives of our industry partners, candidates for membership, and former and future local meeting chairs. We were also honoured to welcome a new Honorary Member, Dr Robert Gottlander, a long-time friend and supporter of our Academy through his previous management roles at several industry partners.
The theme of this meeting was “Rethinking the Compromised Tooth”, and it was explored from all possible perspectives. We brought together an amazing panel of speakers who are all recognized as key opinion leaders in their field, to discuss how orthodontic, endodontic, periodontal, implantology and restorative strategies can enhance the lifespan of compromised teeth or the development of implant sites. Overall, the presentations once again revealed how important treatment planning, diagnosis, and clinical protocols are in achieving success in such cases. Another key take-home message was that monotherapy offers no solution to complex biomechanical issues. This implies the careful selection of evidence-based procedures and proper biomaterial choice for final restorations. Short presentations by five members (Aris Tripodakis, Sanjay Sethi, Basil Mizrahi, Grégoire Audi and Tidu Manko) rounded off the overview with original case presentations. These presentations sparked lively discussions, guided by our moderators, Stefano Gracis and Aris Tripodakis. We would like to thank our speakers once again: David De Franco, Oliver Pontius, Julio Rasperini, Inaki Gamborena, Raphael Wymann and Jorge Andre Cardoso, for their brilliant contributions.
We finally had the pleasure of listening to our future active members, Gaetano Paolone, Jean-Pierre Gardella, Maxim Kopylov and Lara Stangaciclovic. We congratulate them on successfully completing their case preparation and presentation to the membership committee and group present at this autumn meeting. They will receive their diploma at our Gala Dinner in Barcelona next year, and we look forward to welcoming them into our active members' family.
The dedicated webpage documenting the entire event will be published shortly. Check it out!
Warm regards,
Didier & Organization’s team of 2025 EAED Fall Meeting

Presidential Advisory Committee
Past Presidents and Past Secretaries General
The growth and the development of the Academy as the leading forum in Esthetic Dentistry worldwide, both academically and clinically, is due to the leaders who in the past have contributed to the achievement of its goals. They are a fundamental and a vital asset for our group as their accumulated wisdom and experience becomes crucial especially when the management of the Academy is passed on to younger upcoming leaders. Their long-lasting service becomes inevitably the leading force for guiding safely the new executives, complying with the wise quote of Cicero:
"If you are proud of your ancestors, do not deprive your descendants from this prospect".
MarcusTullius Cicero
One of the reasons why the EAED has maintained its leading academic position in the world of dental esthetics is due to the fact that past leaders (Presidents and Secretaries General) keep on remaining heavily involved in the active life of the Academy. As a matter of fact, they are appointed in different roles in various committees, ranging from the Membership Committee to the Affiliate Committee, to the Financial Advisors.
Strategic Presidential Advisors
Since several years, two members of the Presidential Advisory Committee are also appointed by the Past Presidents to participate in the Executive Committee Meetings in order to provide advice and an historical perspective, whenever requested or necessary. The members appointed for the 2025-2026 presidential term are:
· Dr. Stefano Gracis, Past President 2016-2018
· Professor Aris Petros Tripodakis, Past President 2012-2014
An additional duty of the strategic presidential advisors is to guide and assist the President-Elect in his/her mission as the Scientific Chairman/Chairwoman of the EAED Autumn Closed Meetings. Additionally, they are charged with the responsibility to coordinate and organize the Proceedings of those meetings when structured (biannually) as Workshops, to be published separately as an IJED supplement, acting as the Co-Editors. The aim of such documentation, in general, is to distil the EAED Active Members’ clinical knowledge, experience and creativity addressing a clinical yet arguable topic of Esthetic Dentistry, thus generating a scientific publication which, whenever possible, represents the consensus of the group.
Aris Petros Tripodakis & Stefano Gracis

Title: Beautiful Dentures in an Implant World: Rediscovering the Art of Removable Prosthodontics
Synopsis:
Dentures are often misunderstood, underappreciated, and even scorned in the modern implant era. Some colleagues visibly recoil when I say I work exclusively in removable prosthodontics—and yes, I’ve genuinely been asked, “Would you give your wife a denture?” My answer: If it’s the right option—yes.
This presentation challenges the stigma. Beautiful, well-made dentures are not only still relevant—they are, in many situations, the most appropriate, aesthetic, and functional solution for patients. Whether implants aren’t possible, have failed, or simply aren’t wanted, dentures can be the key to restoring smiles and confidence.
But this talk goes further. It shows how removable prosthodontics can serve as a powerful diagnostic tool to answer the fundamental question behind all restorative work: where should the teeth go? Through honest storytelling, humour, and a wealth of clinical images and videos, I’ll demonstrate how:
· Denture scan achieve exceptional aesthetic outcomes—often better than fixed alternatives
· Pre-implant diagnostic dentures create the blueprint for ideal tooth position and facial support
· Removable prosthodontics is not a backward step—but an advanced, creative discipline
· Mastering dentures raises the standard of care across all treatment modalities
Let’s bring this ‘Cinderella subject’ back to the ball.
Brief Biography of Finlay Sutton
Finlay Sutton is a specialist prosthodontist from the northwest of England who focuses entirely on removable prosthodontics—and loves it. Working side-by-side with master technician Rowan Garstang (in the room next door), Finlay provides patients with dentures that not only look incredibly natural but also function beautifully.
After qualifying in 1993 and spending six unpredictable years in general practice, Finlay realized he needed to go deeper. This led to seven years of specialist training in prosthodontics and restorative dentistry at Manchester and Liverpool dental hospitals. In2007, he opened his own referral practice dedicated to removable prosthetics.
These days, his time is split between treating patients, teaching dentists how to make better dentures(and enjoy it), and developing new ideas to improve care. His mission? To help more people chew, smile, and live better—with dentures that actually work.

Algarve closed meeting update
Dear Colleagues,
What a wonderful meeting we had in Algarve
!It was a great success—not only scientifically, but also financially, and in terms of the continued vitality of our Academy. We managed to stay within the budget approved by the Academy, without exceeding it, while maintaining an exceptionally high standard throughout. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive—both regarding the quality of the hotel and the kindness of the staff, as well as the excellent food served at every lunch and dinner during the congress.
To share some figures: we welcomed 45 active and life members, along with 13 affiliates. Among those 13 affiliates, we are pleased to announce that 4 have became active members of the Academy:
Gaetano Paolone; Jean Pierre Gardella; Lara Stangacilovic; Maxim Kopilov. We look forward to formally congratulating them at the next Gala Dinner in Barcelona.
We were also honored to recognize Dr. Robert Gotlander, who was made an Honorary Member of the Academy at this meeting.
All in all, it was a truly enriching and successful gathering. As many of you have seen from the comments on our Instagram group and elsewhere, the atmosphere was overwhelmingly positive. This Fall Meeting was a clear reflection of the true spirit of our Academy.
Warm regards,
Pascal Zyman, Secretary General
Algarve closed meeting Scientific "Pearls"
1. Dr. David J. De Franco (IT)
Improving tooth prognosis and lifespan with orthodontics
Orthodontic treatment can improve the prognosis and increase the lifespan of
compromised teeth. The objectives of orthodontic therapy are discussed including simple
levelling and alignment of teeth but more importantly correcting the underlying
malocclusion, establishing a proper overbite and overjet, and obtaining occlusal stability.
A thorough diagnosis is essential to correctly plan the orthodontic treatment. For
example, a misdiagnosed ankylosed tooth can lead to extraction rather than the proper
approach of surgical uncovering and orthodontic repositioning.
Basic biologic principles are discussed. Teeth move through alveolar bone, whether
through the normal process of tooth eruption or by forces generated by orthodontic
appliances. Both eruption and orthodontics accomplish this through similar fundamental
biologic processes, osteoclastogenesis and osteogenesis. Both tooth eruption and
orthodontic tooth movement require soft tissue intervening between the tooth structure
and the alveolar bone. The dental follicle is needed for tooth eruption and the periodontal
ligament is needed for orthodontic tooth movement.
The distinction between tooth eruption and orthodontic extrusion is explained and the
difference between slow and rapid extrusion with and without fiberotomy is discussed.
Several cases with compromised teeth (impacted teeth, periodontal involvements,
external root resorption and structural problems) are presented where clinicians had
recommended extraction, however, the orthodontic treatment greatly improved the
prognosis and avoided extraction.

2. Dr. Giulio Rasperini (IT)
Resolving complex periodontal involvement to improve tooth prognosis and lifespan
In today’s dentistry the aesthetic demand from the patients has become the main challenge in Periodontology. Besides the obvious functional results is now important to achieve aesthetic success.
The last Classification of Periodontal Disease is focused on the interdental Clinical Attachment level. The Aim of “Classic” Periodontal reconstructive surgical techniques is the regeneration of the infra bony defects. The evolution of the regenerative plastic surgery, thanks tot he Biologics, consider to not perform papilla incision maintaining the perfusion and the integrity of the interdental tissue makes possible to treat simultaneously the bony defect and boost the tissue phenotype.
So, the develop of regenerative clinical and biological concepts, biomaterials and new surgical techniques during the last years, makes possible to answer to the patient’s demands and regenerate the interdental attachment of compromised teeth with stable long-term results.

3. Dr. Oliver Pontius (DE)
Resolving complex endodontic problems to improve tooth prognosis and lifespan
The lecture covered the 3 following topics:
· The Rationale in Endodontics
· Different types of perio- endo lesions
· Outcome of nonsurgical endodontic therapy
At the conclusion of the presentation, the participants should understand :
· The different etiologies and treatment approaches of so-called perio-endo lesions
· Different outcome assessments in endodontics (success vs. survival)
· The critical pre-, intra- and postoperative predictors for endodontic success?

Sardinia Closed Meeting Proceedings
The 2024 Closed EAED Meeting took place in Colona Resort, Costa Smeralda Sardinia, on September 19-21, 2024.
The meeting was structured as a Workshop under the Scientific leadership of our former President-Elect and currently President Dr Didier Dietchi. The topic that was introduced was “The ‘grey zone’ in Esthetic Restorative Dentistry”. The scientific and clinical content of the contributed information, referred to the two major families of restorative dental materials which have been developed over the years emulating esthetically the natural tooth substances: composite resins and ceramics. In the course of their progressive evolution, both materials have reached amazing optical qualities in reproducing those of enamel and dentine. Therefore, a clinician striving for esthetic excellence in restoring the anterior teeth ,clearly finds oneself within the “grey zone” of decision making, in choosing the best material along with the appropriate clinical course of action. Two clinicians, Tony Rotondo from Australia and Federico Ferraris from Italy, with outstanding skills and experience, presented the clinical relevance of both the above alternative approaches, while Amelie Mainjot from Belgium exhibited an overview of the existing comparative literature. The three presented essays reflected the spectrum of the “grey zone” with reasoning behind the proposed treatments, decisions and protocols, supported by clinical and scientific evidence. The consensus outcome that was generated from the discussions among the essayists and the members conducted by the moderators, highlighted the multifactorial nature of the “grey zone” in esthetic restorative dentistry. Thus, the Academy reaffirmed the principle of minimally invasive dentistry as central to responsible clinical practice by averting overtreatment. Both, composite resins and ceramics were shown to be considered equally effective inmost clinical situations. Yet, the treatment decisions were shown to be guided by minimally invasive principles, preservation of natural tooth substance and meticulous clinical management. Above all the ethical perspective and patient-centered considerations were strongly emphasized in order to prevail over the observed trend on social media, promoting an “esthetic” overtreatment attitude. The entire transcript of the meeting including the introductory contributions of the Scientific Chairman and of the Moderators along with the elaborated essays of the presenters, as well as the recorded discussions among the faculty and the members, along with the generated consensus conclusions, resulted to a written manuscript to be published as a supplement of the 2026 IJED spring issue.
