Looking Ahead to Barcelona: Celebrating 40 Years of EAED
We will soon be gathering in Barcelona for another memorable event to celebrate our shared passion for aesthetic dentistry.
The vision of the team behind the scientific programme is to unify the changes in treatment concepts and technologies that impact the way we provide our patients with beautiful smiles and improved function, and consequently, improved quality of life. Once again, we have brought together some of the world's leading specialists in their field to share the message that technology alone is not enough to improve aesthetic dentistry; proper treatment concepts are also required. In other words, modernity largely lies in conservative and reliable protocols, supported by new digital tools that facilitate conception, visualisation, and communication of treatment outcomes. Our speakers will also cover a wide range of specialties that make up “Aesthetic Dentistry”.
Various initiatives and social media communication have attracted many guests and young dentists to Barcelona, and we have designed a programme to fulfil everyone's expectations too. One of the programme's strengths is its discussion of clinical situations of various levels of complexity, so that both younger colleagues and experts will be exposed to useful, practical and stimulating information.
As always, special sessions such as the John MacLean and Willy Geller honorary lectures and the Peter Schärer honorary treatment planning and innovation sessions will be highlights of this congress.
We look forward to welcoming everyone to the Maritim Museum in a few weeks' time.
Have a safe journey to Spain, and "Hasta luego"...

The compromised tooth
Achieving a predictable, long-term restorationfor teeth with severely reduced coronal structure remains a significant clinical challenge.
If a compromised tooth is to be preserved and restored with a crown, a circumferential ferrule of minimum 2mm is recommended (Naumann et al, 2018). A reduced or absent ferrule significantly increases the risk of restoration failure, regardless of the post material used.
The ferrule acts as a reinforcing band aroundthe remaining tooth structure, helping to distribute the forces along the impacted tooth and its root. In addition, the remaining dentine must have a minimum thickness of 1mm to provide structural support.
In some cases, it may be preferable to consider extraction and replacement with a fixed restoration, such as a conventional bridge, resin-bonded bridge or an implant.
If a tooth is deemed restorable, achieving an adequate ferrule becomes an important consideration. Options to facilitate this include:
1. Crow lengthening
2. Orthodontic extrusion
3. Biologically orientated preparation technique (BOPT)
The use of orthodontic extrusion can provide agenerous ferrule on sound root structure with little to no aesthetic compromise. Whereas, crown lengthening can compromise aesthetics in certain clinical circumstances.
Vertical tooth preparation offers a biologically and structurally respectful approach to further improve the distribution of mechanical stresses to the root by decreasing the extent of circumferential cervical tooth reduction.
In cases where existing biological width can be modified, the Biologically Orientated Preparation Technique (BOPT) may allow a ferrule to be established without the need for orthodontic extrusion or crown lengthening.
By utilising vertical preparation and carefully managing the restoration phase, the soft tissues can adapt to form a new stable gingival architecture around the restoration margin. When performed correctly, this approach can provide a conservative and biologically respectful method of achieving ferrule while preserving remaining tooth structure. Additional advantages may include reduced risk to the vital pulp, gingival margin thickening, and improved long-term soft tissue stability.

IJED 01/26
is out now
The secret has been revealed: Our latest issue IJED 01/26 is out now! 🙌 But why a manta ray on the cover? Rays glide elegantly and extremely energy-efficiently through water. This makes them interesting for bionics engineers.Scientists at Harvard University have modeled a soft robot about 16 mm in size on these animals. It moves forward with wave-like fin movements and is controlled by light signals. Compared with real rays, the swimming movements of the soft robot appear somewhat clumsy, but are almost as efficient.
